Forum: movie_of_the_week Subject: Spuzz and everyone...any interest in this?

About a year ago Spuzz suggested the idea of creating a live chat room showing a Prelinger film where everyone could join in at one location and comment on the movie in real time (see post http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=12706)

We can create a free dedicated webpage somewhere on our site if there still any interest. ??

Glenn: thanks for replying to our idea.

We had hoped by now that this idea would have gotten more feedback, but alas, you are the only one so far.

It may be that we did not explain very well the mechanics of this experiment, or that everyone is satisfied with the method of watching films and commenting on selected films as currently used in this forum, or dare we say -- it's a ho-hum concept and no one wants to bother with it. Who knows at this point.

So here is at least the mechanics of what we had in mind when we proposed this effort --

-- the forum here could continue to come up with the film of the week

-- each week we would embed that film in a web page (probably using Windows Media Player as it is largely universal for PCs and Macs)

-- next to the film have a real-time live embedded chat window (maybe ICQ)

-- have a clock on the page for the reason below

-- everyone agree on a time and day of the week to meet, and at the appointed hour, everyone clicks on the Play button and watches the film together while commenting as they wish

-- or maybe there is a better way to do this.

Let us know what you think. Or any questions you have. It could well be worth a try at least.

It might be that the community can't very well deal with meeting at a given time of day...

I know it's tough for me to commit to any given time frame, and I write my own schedule.. could easily be more difficult for others.

You have a good point Glenn. Coordinating everyone in one place at one time just might not be workable.

Perhaps the only alternative would be what we are already doing: posting some movies cut into relatively short clips where people can leave their comments or captions. Then recompile the clips back into the whole film.

Unfortunately so far though, that hasn't gotten much use either.
